A couple of months ago, Owen noticed how rare the CA condor is while leafing through our bird field guide. He started to cry and said, "They might go extinct!"
This was heartbreaking and really made me sad about the degradation we humans have caused to our children's natural world.
We had a talk about how people are trying to help the condor come back. Owen made a dear little sign, "Save the California Condor" and we put it up on our front door.
In preparation for his 6th birthday, we suggested to him that he could ask friends to contribute a few dollars to help him make this idea a reality instead of bringing presents to his party. He was very excited about this idea, even when we made extra sure he understood that this would mean people would give condor donations -instead- of presents.
Owen turned 6 years old on Earth Day 2009. He had a party with lots of his kindergarten friends at our local gymnastics place and the donations rolled in... Family and friends also contributed and he raised $350.00, which we donated to the Ventana Wildlife Society for their condor rehabilitation efforts.
Take home message: WE CAN DO THIS, PEOPLE!
